Who are you today?

"Who are you today?"  How often do you get asked this question?  As a substitute teacher I get asked this question a lot.  I know people are really asking who I'm substituting for.  I've responded with different answers.

My most common response is "I'm me.  I'm always me.  Today I'm subbing for _______."

One time I responded, "I'm Melinda Mower.  Who are you today?"  The teacher laughed and told me her name.

A few times I've responded, "I don't know.  I'm a different person every day and I'm really confused."  That usually gets a laugh.

I could not possibly be the teacher I am subbing for.  I've had to tell students, especially kindergarteners, that I am not their teacher and I will probably do things differently than she does.  I do the best I can to follow the sub plans left by the regular classroom teacher.  Even then I don't always do things exactly the same way he or she would.

I'm considering responding with something like "I'm Wonder Woman today."

So, if you were asked, "who are you today?" how would you respond?

Shirts

My married name was Shurtz (pronounced shirts).  So, when I substitute for the younger grades, I draw a shirt on the board and write Ms. Shurtz inside.  This picture was drawn by a second grader and put a smile on my face.  She gave it to me on a Thursday afternoon in November.  It had been a long week.  I was in the 7th classroom (and 3rd school) in 4 days.  The teachers had grade-level meetings at the district office that week.  So, Tuesday I was subbing for a kindergarten teacher in the morning and a different kindergarten teacher in the afternoon.  Same for first grade on Wednesday and second grade on Thursday.  I was exhausted.  So, I really appreciated the thought that went into this simple drawing.  She signed her name at the bottom so I can remember who it's from.

underwear?

Today while I was substituting, I was asked to grade spelling tests in a 5th grade class.  I came across the word "underwear" on a test.  It was spelled correctly.  However, that was not the correct word.  The word was "unaware."
I got a good laugh out of that.  It was my favorite part of today.

Substitute Teaching

I have been substitute teaching for 4 years in my local school district.  I have often thought about blogging some of my experiences.  I finally decided to do that.
Tuesday I substituted for an elementary art teacher.  The teacher's plans said to show How To Draw videos from YouTube and have the students follow along.  I am not an artist but I have learned that I can draw if I am following directions.
I drew this shark.
This Shark was drawn by a student who added extra details to the picture.
These two hammerhead sharks were drawn by two other students from another video.  When they saw me taking pictures they asked me to take pictures of their drawings too.

I also drew and owl which I gave away.  A couple students gave me their drawings of owls.  So cute.
I drew this Fortnite Durr Burger.
I'm glad I kept this to give to my son.  He seemed happy to get it.
There are so many instructional videos on YouTube.  The videos we used in class are from Art for Kids Hub.  Easy to follow and you can pause them and rewatch them.
I enjoyed my day in art.

ladybug

I haven't posted anything in such a long time.  But I thought Shelly would really like to see a post or two from me.  :-)  I don't know that I'm really expressing what this meant to me.  But I know my family will understand.

I was really missing my Grammy yesterday.  I was headed outside with Matthew and we saw this ladybug on the door.  Ladybugs pop up in interesting places.  I still miss my Grammy.  But this little ladybug reminded me of Grammy's love for us.

What they say Wednesday

I found some little notebook pages hanging around the basement.  The first page says, "The fallowing pages contane silly things Matthew said."  Second page, "Wake up it's night time!" said by Matt.  Herd by Emily.  Third page, "I see a yellow shurt.  What color was it?" said by Matt.  Herd by Emily.

Do you just love the way she spelled "shurt"?  hehehe

What they say Thursday

I missed a What they say Wednesday.  So, I'm posting what was said on Wednesday on Thursday.  :-)
I took the boys to the Dollar Tree to get pirate accessories to go with their pirate costumes.  Matthew pointed to the Dollar Tree and said, "there aren't any leaves on the Dollar Tree."  He then pointed to a real tree and said, "there are leaves on that tree; but not on the Dollar Tree."
That's pretty observant!
